Roy Jones Jr defends his IBF Super Middleweight title against former 3 division world champion Vinny Pazienza. Arguably the best performance of Roy Jones Jr's middleweight career. More info below...

In 1993, Roy Jones Jr beat Bernard Hopkins for the vacant IBF World Middleweight title and quickly became the hottest prospect in boxing. He had the speed, power, attitude and style that set the boxing scene on fire. In 1994 he beat undefeated James Toney for the IBF World Super Middleweight title and then successfully defended it by 1st round TKO against Antoine Byrd. He was 28-0 with 24 knockouts when he stepped in the ring against veteran Vinny Pazienza and was a 12-1 favorite to win.

Vinny Pazienza was a former IBF World Lightweight champion in 1987, WBA World Super Welterweight champion in 1991 (a belt he had to vacate due to a broken neck), IBO World Super Middleweight champion in 1993 and had recently won the IBC Super Middleweight title via a controversial decision over Roberto Duran in 1994. He had been boxing professionally since 1983 and held a record of 40-5. He was a 12 year veteran and nearing 33 years of age, not old, but not exactly young either. The Pazmanian Devil had the heart of a fighter with no quit in him. In his last fight, a rematch with Roberto Duran, he hammered home a unanimous 12 round decision to retain his IBC belt and left Duran commenting afterwards "I have never fought a guy like him before, he fights like he has dope in his body".

Roy Jones Jr pulled off the performance of his career as the fight got underway. He was too fast, too slick and too strong for Vinny Paz. Vinny worked as hard as he could and gave a valiant effort, occasionally catching Jones against the ropes, but he just couldn't land anything truly substantial. In fact, Roy Jones went the entire 4th round without being hit! In round 6, with Vinny bleeding from the right eye and nose, Jones knocked him down 3 times in quick succession leaving no choice for the ref but to stop the fight. The last knockdown was very impressive as it was an accurate barrage of hooks and uppercuts that sent Vinny reeling across the ring.

Many thought Vinny's best years were behind him but surprisingly in his very next fight Vinny Paz would redeem himself somewhat by beating another 28-0 fighter in Dana Rosenblatt and winning the lightly regarded WBU Super Middleweight belt. Vinny would get a couple more shots at world titles over the next few years but unfortunately was unable to win any. He lost a rematch to Rosenblatt in 1999 and then finally called it quits in 2004 with a record of 50-10. Roy Jones on the other hand would go from strength to strength. By 2001 he held the WBC, WBA, IBF, IBO, WBF and IBA versions of the Word Light Heavyweight title. His crowning achievement however would come in 2003, when Roy Jones Jr beat John Ruiz for the WBA World Heavyweight Title while weighing only 193 pounds! Unheard of in today's era. Many fans consider Roy Jones Jr the best pound for pound boxer that ever laced gloves, I'm very nearly tempted to say I'm one of them...
